Focus is important in all writing—especially in songwriting, in which we have such limited time to tell a story, make an impact, or make a point.
Choose one set of characters, one theme, one place, one time, one message, or one evolving situation. Everything else can wait in line—to be developed into a song of its own.
So far, I’ve had much better luck exploring one idea in depth, rather than struggling to pursue several all at once. It’s hard enough to develop one idea. I remind myself of this often:
Step into two boats at once, and you’ll probably end up in the water.
