You’ve probably heard stories about songwriters who can write a brilliant hit in ten minutes.
Good for them. For most of us, though, most of the time… songs don’t come so easily. Songwriting is a serious, long-term effort.
That’s why I’ve written 31 Days to Better Songwriting, a PDF workbook that’ll take you on a month-long musical journey. By the end of Day 31, you’ll have finished at least one great song that you can be proud of, with enough ideas left over for many more.
Here’s what you could accomplish by this time next week.
- Day 1 (today): I’ll point out ten bottomless resources for great song ideas that’re already sitting right in front of you.
- Day 2 (tomorrow): on the second day of this program, you’ll punch through writer’s block with some fast-paced writing exercises. Less self-doubt, more creation.
- Day 3 will challenge you to set songwriting goals for yourself and arm you with practical tips for sticking to them.
- Day 4: you’ll learn to write your own chord progressions, and find advanced tips on working with chord progressions.
- Day 5 will leave you with nowhere to hide, and it could very well mark the moment that you become a dedicated, serious songwriter. Are you ready to dig deep, confront your fears, and write the songs that only you can write?
- Day 6: as the end of the first week approaches, you’ll learn a simple and reliable way to write new melodies that fit your lyrics perfectly.
- Day 7: to finish off the first week of the 31-day program, you’ll set writing goals for yourself and learn ways to hold yourself accountable. By the end of this first week, you’ve already composed and written quite a bit, and made a commitment to building songwriting into your life.
A month-long musical journey
My greatest hope is that you’ll read this eBook actively and actually do the exercises suggested–but the songwriting tips and techniques in 31 Days to Better Songwriting can also just be read and absorbed at your own pace.
You can read 31 Days to Better Songwriting just for the valuable insights it contains, or–even better–you can use it as a dedicated, day-by-day program.
About the Author and The Halted Clock
My name’s Nicholas Tozier. You may already know me from my songwriting website, The Halted Clock: on the Art of Songwriting, where I’ve been writing about songwriting since 2009.
I’ve learned firsthand–and through the anguished letters of readers all over the world–that every part of the songwriting process can lead to mental blocks and self-doubt. In the past, I’ve run into all of the following problems and more:
- I’ve torn out my hair thinking that I don’t have any good song ideas.
- I’ve stalled in the middle of songs that never got finished.
- I’ve hoarded finished songs without ever recording or performing them for an audience (what’s the point?).
Almost every day, I’ve been tempted to give up. I’m sure you’re tempted sometimes too. But no matter how hard it gets, there’s always a way to put one foot in front of the other and play the next gig, write the next song. There’s always a little something you can do to take your songwriting to the next level.
Over time I’ve learned motivational tricks and shortcuts that could have saved me years.
What I’ve got for you

Testimonial from Jason Welwood of Calgary, Canada
Prior to downloading the book, I had been working on songwriting and working towards my goal of one day booking studio time and going on to record a full length album of my own material. This has been a long ongoing project for me (some songs I have had in the works for literally 3 and a half years!). I had been running into trouble prior to downloading the workbook. There was a good 6 month dry spell where I wrote absolutely nothing, and was getting to the point of giving up entirely on something that deep down meant a great deal to me. This bothered me immensely. Most time when I would pick up a guitar or a pen to start writing, five minutes in I would be overcome with this feeling of failure, as if there were no way I could possibly turn this around and head in a positive direction.
I stumbled across your book and your website one night and after reading, I felt as if I had come across a gold mine of knowledge! I can’t explain how much of a help it has been. I have been following along in the workbook regularly, I have almost entirely overcome my instinct to procrastinate, I’ve been setting goals and sticking to them and I haven’t looked back. When I started the workbook a couple of weeks ago, I had maybe 3 of the 10 songs that I had wished to include on my album’s track list ready to demo. Now, since then I have prepared 7 of the now 11 song track list to be demoed.
Writing Songs is the Best Way to Learn Songwriting
As I mentioned above, this eBook is substantial enough that you could improve your songwriting just by reading it–but if you actually do every recommended task, you’ll surprise yourself with what you can accomplish in just one short month.
We’ve already looked at what you’ll do in the first week’s worth of tasks. By the end of 31 Days, you’ll also:
- Record a demo.
- Study songs by your favorite artists and learn by example.
- Hone your performance skills.
- Learn to tell compelling stories in song.
- Give and receive helpful feedback.
- Learn about nine different types of song, and how to write them yourself.
- Conquer your creative blocks and finish the songs you start.
