A Collaborative Object Writing Exercise

Here’s a great way to warm up and break the ice with a collaborator at the beginning of a songwriting session.

1. Just sit down together for a quick, tandem object writing exercise—if you’re new to this, click the link above to learn how object writing is done.

2. Start from the same keyword and go! Set a timer for 7-10 minutes. Then, once the alarm goes off, take turns reading your freewriting aloud. By now you’ll both be loosening up a bit.

3. Next, you can search the two freewriting sheets for phrases and words that rhyme. Write these on a separate sheet of paper. Presto—now you’ve got a great pool of very natural, organic rhymes to choose from! And because the same keyword can lead two people in very, very different directions, you’ve also got two sets of life experience to draw from—collaboration at its best.
