Songwriting Prompt: an Effective and Little-Known Rhyming Technique

Feeling adventurous? Try writing a song that’s turned inside out–by moving the rhyme from tail to head.

Head Rhyme

As the name suggests, this is rhyme that occurs at the beginning of each line (instead of the tail end). It’s rare to find in a song, so it can really add an interesting sound to your songs.

Because it creates such powerful emphasis at the beginning of each line, head-rhyme will cause you to write much differently. It’ll change the shape of both your musical and lyrical phrases.

I’m sure I’m showing my true language geek colors here, but I find it fun afterward to see the long line of interesting words detonating all the way down the left margin.

Try it!
