“I really believe that if you don’t have the strength to paint over a good painting, you could never have painted a good painting in the first place.” -Norton Wisdom
Performance painting is an interesting and new concept to me. Isn’t that analogous to what we do as musicians? A note hangs in the air only as long as we sustain it; then the vibrations fade away, and we’re faced again with the choice of what to fill all that empty air with.
A common solution is to repeat a pattern. In many styles of music, that’s one of the safer choices; it’s less risky than inventing something entirely new.
Norton Wisdom and Nels Cline are an interesting match here: a performance painter and an improviser. Both push beyond what we’d usually expect from a painter and a guitarist, respectively.
