Why You Should Join the “50 Songs in 90 Days” Challenge Right Now

YOU: “But Nick, didn’t that start like 40 days ago?!”

Something like that, yes.

YOU: “So it’s like 50 songs in 50 days now?”

Right.

YOU: “And you’re telling me I should sign up now.”

You bet I am.

YOU: “Everyone’s got to be way ahead of me by now, though!”

Maybe some people are, but honestly most songwriters spend the first 30, 40, or more days of the challenge procrastinating. The real action happens toward the end, when everybody freaks out over the approaching deadline and starts banging out songs.

As you can see by clicking on my profile below, I’ve only got three songs to my credit so far.

5090

YOU: “What if I don’t finish?”

Certainly nobody’s going to knock your door down and drag you off screaming—unless you asked a really intense friend to hold you accountable for progress, I suppose.

Even if you fall short of writing 50 songs by October 1st, the attempt could leave you a significantly more productive month of songwriting than usual.

YOU: “Any other reason I should join the 50 Songs in 90 Days Challenge?”

I’m glad you asked—here’s an astoundingly convenient list for your enjoyment.

Why You Should Join the 50 Songs in 90 Days Challenge

  1. You’ll write. A lot. And you won’t just start songs; you’ll finish them. Even if that means they’re rough drafts, they’re done and you’ll have a lot of drafts to work with after October 1st. If you haven’t finished a song for a while, this is your chance!
  2. I’ll cheer you on. After you sign up, just mosey on over to my profile and say hello.
  3. It’s a great way to combat perfectionism. Deadline pressure will probably cause you to use some dummy lines and accept finished lyrics and songs that are noticeably less than perfect. This is healthy for those of you (like me) who suffer perfectionism.
  4. You don’t have to post demos or even lyric sheets. All that is optional. At the moment, I’m just using my profile to track my progress and keep up with those of my fellow songwriters.
  5. Clean out your idea file. Got some song ideas and fragments just sitting around? Here’s a great chance to get those out of limbo!
